What is a cubic yard and how many do I need?

A cubic yard is a 3’ by 3’ by 3’ area.  Most materials can cover approximately 100
square feet, 3” deep, per cubic yard.  This is especially true for mulch and crushed
rock under 2”.  Material larger than two inches varies by material.  The
recommended application is 3”- 4” deep.  Please refer to our
coverage calculator
for further assistance.

How is colored mulch made and is it safe?

After our mulch has gone through the grinding process, it is then put through a
coloring machine that mixes water and a 100% organic colorant to the wood product
as it passes through the hopper, creating a safe, nontoxic and  people, animal and
plant friendly product.

How many tons are in a yard?

This varies depending on the product.  Rocks and soils tend to be a little over 1 ton
per cubic yard.  Mulch and some amendments tend to be under 1 ton.  We prefer to
do things in yards to provide a more consistent quantity.  For example: when it rains
or snows, the water will weigh the material down and cause the customer to get less
material per ton than if he or she purchased it by the yard.

Do I need to put anything under the mulch to prevent
weeds?

No. Landscape fabric and similar materials create a barrier between the mulch and
the ground that prevents the mulch from bonding to the ground. This can result in
the mulch blowing around more.   When using the recommended depth of 3”-4”,
mulch creates a natural weed barrier.  Fabric also prevents organic material from
reaching the soil.  An exception to this rule is when there is an area with persistent
thistles or very large existing weeds, it is recommended to use a weed killer prior to
the installation of the mulch.

What is the best mulch for high wind areas?

There are several options here but the most common choices are Cascade Cedar,
also known as gorilla hair, and the fine mulches do well in high wind areas.  While
Cascade Cedar has the reputation, Rocky Top has developed a mix of our light and
dark brown fine mulch that is similar in color and texture to the Cascade Cedar and
stays down nearly as well for half the price.  It also keeps its color more than twice
as long as Cascade Cedar.  Mulches not suitable for high wind include Rocky Top
Cedar, Medium Pine Bark, and Little Pine Bark.

What is in your topsoil mixes?

100% Topsoil Amendment contains a mixture of Rocky Top Humus, Class I, and
Class II Composts. Premium Topsoil contains 60%  of the amendment and 40%
Topsoil.  Tri-Mix contains 40% of the amendment and 60% Topsoil.

What is tilling and do I have to till?

Tilling simply means turning over the soil in some fashion, usually using a rotor
tiller.  It is recommended for planting but if you do not want to till we offer the soil
mixes.  It is recommended that the tilling depth is 4-6 inches deep and then apply a
form of compost or amendment about 2 inches thick and mix that together.
